Product Description

"A fast-paced picture book that combines the drama foreshadowing the American Revolution, the heroic Maccabee fight for freedom, and Sephardic Hanukkah customs" --Association of Jewish Libraries"An engaging story about a Jewish American past" --Jewish Book Council" A delightful book about friendship, the Revolutionary war, Jewish history, and of course, recipes" --The Chocolate ProfessorJoshua Mendes misses his best friend Isaac, who has moved to Boston. Joshua’s Papa is importing chocolate beans to the American Colonies, showing café owners how to make hot chocolate now that the tea tax has made tea too expensive to drink. When Papa travels to Boston, Joshua joins him. Together, they help Isaac’s family open a chocolate house, while the people of Boston demonstrate against British tea taxation.Set against the backdrop of Hanukkah and the American fight for independence, this is a story of friendship, freedom, and a love of chocolate. End notes provide background about the Boston Tea Party, a brief explanation of the holiday of Hanukkah, and a description of America's first Jews, predominantly settlers from Spain and Portugal who came to escape religious persecution and to find religious freedom and economic opportunity. Includes recipes for Colonial-style hot chocolate and bunuelos.

Although my oldest granddaughter had read the Boston Chocolate Party by herself and had written a review ,when I got to their Brooklyn home yesterday, I read the book to my granddaughter who is in 2nd grade. She enjoyed the book and liked reading about Chanukah in Colonial times. I explained a little American history to her especially about the Boston Tea Party which she had not yet learned about in school. She loved the pictures. She figured out and understood that the struggle the Colonists faced was similar to the struggle Jews faced during Maccabi times. She loved Joshua and how he was able to help Isaac and his mother. She also loved the Chocolate element in the story the best. She wanted to make your recipe for hot chocolate and drink some hot chocolate when we finished it!? It's a great book to read to the grandchildren or have them read if they are able to, and even our 4 year old granddaughter enjoyed listening to the story. I am very appreciative of Jewish children's books especially this one. Thank you!!!!?
