Josef Stalin blockaded all ground routes coming in and out of Berlin to cut off West Berliners from all food and essential supplies. Without outside help, over 2.2 million people would die. As one of the American pilots participating in the Airlift mission, Lt. Gail S. About the Author: Margot Theis Raven has been a professional writer working in the fields of radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and children's books for thirty years. Ms. Raven earned her degree in English from Rosemont College and attended Villanova University for theater study, and Kent State University for German language. About the Illustrator: Born in the Netherlands, Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Holland. I purchased this book as a gift for a senior citizen who is interested in WWII uplifting, heart-warming stories. This one is guaranteed to touch your heart, perhaps even bringing tears as you read it as it did for me. It is a "MUST READ" for all children and adults and will help them to better understand an important historical event. An American pilot, Lt. Gail S. Halverson was one of many American and British pilots who participated in this historical outpouring of humanitarianism known as the Berlin Airlift. While dropping needed food and other supplies over Berlin, Halverson also began dropping chocolate candy to give children a little bit of joy. He soon became known as the "chocolate pilot" to all the children who looked forward to his fly overs. In an unusual way, Mercedes, a seven-year-old child, was a recipient of Halverson's generosity, and eventually developed a life-long friendship with him.I became acquainted with this book during a summer writing workshop for teachers at Walla Walla University in Washington State several years ago. I immediately fell in love with the story and began researching the history behind the events. Everything proved to be accurate. The author and illustrator are to be commended for producing a beautiful, hardcover book worth reading over and over again. I have especially enjoyed reading this book to students of all ages on Veterans Day. It is on my top ten list of all-time favorites.
